FULLERTON, Calif. – No. 20 Oregon used timely hitting and a standout pitching performance from Morgan Scott to sweep a pair of games Saturday night at the Judi Garman Classic.
Alyssa Daniell's go-ahead single in the top of the seventh inning lifted the Ducks past San Jose State, 6-2, in game one Saturday.
Morgan Scott struck out eight in a three-hit, 9-0, shutout against LMU in the nightcap.
"I think it was a total team effort," said Terra McGowan who was 3-for-5, with a double, two home runs and three RBI on Saturday. "Defense, hitting, pitching – it was all on.
"I think our offense is hot right now. We're just trying to make hard contact and the balls go where they go."
How it Happened Game 1: Oregon (16-4) led 2-0 after McGowan's home run to deep left center field in the second inning.
San Jose State (6-11) scored a pair of runs in the fifth and the game was tied 2-2 going into the final inning.
In the top of the seventh, Hanna Delgado, Terra McGowan and Allee Bunker all walked to load the bases. Daniell's single scored both Delgado and McGowan for a 4-2 lead.
KK Humphreys then singled up the middle to score Bunker and McGowan for a 6-2 advantage.
Stevie Hansen (11-2) came on in relief of starter Raegan Breedlove in the fifth and went the final 2.2 innings to win her 11th decision in a row.
How it Happened Game 2: Scott was in command against LMU (8-12) from the first pitch and only allowed one runner to reach scoring position.
"Coach Lombardi and I talked a lot about getting ahead and commanding the zone and being able to get the hitters to swing at my pitch, not the other way around," said Scott.
Scott retired the side in order in the second, fourth and fifth innings to improve to 3-2 on the season.
She kept the Lions at bay while the offense scored in every inning but the second to secure the run-rule victory in five innings.
McGowan hit her second home run of the day, a solo shot in the first inning, to stake the Ducks to an early 1-0 lead.
Oregon scored four times in the third inning to make it 5-0. McGowan walked and went to second on Bunker's single. Humphreys hit a slow roller to the hole at short and beat the throw to first for an infield single. McGowan came around third and scored on the throw to first for a 2-0 lead. Ariel Carlson then singled to score both runners and double up Oregon's lead.
Pinch-hitter Kedre Luschar singled through the box to score Carson with the Ducks' fourth run of the inning.
The Ducks added another run in the fourth when Delgado scored on Bunker's sacrifice fly.
The final blow came in the fifth inning. After Carlson walked and Luschar singled, Bird sent a 1-0 pitch barreling down the left field line for a three-run home run and the decisive 9-0 lead.
Noteworthy: Valley Wong tied her career high with three hits against San Jose State … McGowan, Bunker, Luschar, Humphreys, Carlson and Wong all had at least two hits on Saturday … Humphreys stole her team-leading seventh base of the season against SJSU.
Quotable
Catcher Terra McGowan on Morgan Scott
"I love catching Morgan. Her demeanor on the mound is so intimidating, sometimes I'm even scared to catch her. Her rhythm, her pace, her getting ahead, it was all really really good tonight."
On Deck: The Ducks' six-game weekend concludes with a road contest at Long Beach State Sunday at noon (ESPN+).
