Ducks Homer Twice in Sixth to Win Game One
04/14/23 | Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. – Allee Bunker and Alyssa Daniell each hit two-run home runs in the top of the sixth inning as No. 19 Oregon defeated Arizona State, 5-2, Friday night in front of 1,816 at Farrington Stadium.
Morgan Scott allowed one earned run and struck out nine in improving to 8-4 on the season as the Ducks (26-11, 6-7) snapped the Sun Devils' six-game winning streak in the series.
How it Happened: ASU (21-14, 5-8) scored first on a solo home run by Yannira Acuna in the first inning. That proved to be the game's only run until the sixth inning.
Pitching and defense helped keep the momentum on Oregon's side in the early innings.
"We needed our pitching, we needed our defense early in the game," said Lombardi. "Morgan gave up a bomb and after that I thought she did a good job adjusting her pitches."
Kai Luschar make arguably the catch of the year for the Ducks in the bottom of the second inning. She raced to her right from left field toward a foul ball that was heading out of play. As Luschar reached the warning track, she leapt toward the fence and crashed into the rail, but gloved the ball and hung on, bringing it back into the field of play for the first out of the inning.
"She just went full out," said Bunker. "That's just Kai. She goes full out every day in practice. She makes those plays look easy all day long."
The Ducks also got a lift when Terra McGowan picked off a runner at first in the fourth inning.
Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the sixth, Luschar drew a walk before Bunker hit her eighth home run of the season out to left center.
McGowan then caught ASU's defense off guard and dropped a bunt single down the third baseline. Daniell followed with a line shot out to right field, her sixth homer of the year.
"I though Kai and Terra were huge in that," said Lombardi. "Kai comes up and draws a walk and Bunk hits a bomb. And then Terra comes up, swings the bat and drops a bunt to get on and then Alyssa, who was just missing hitting a home run all night, finally comes up clutch."
Paige Sinicki hit a lead-off home run in the seventh, her first of the season, for the Ducks' fifth run of the game.
For Paige, she's hit balls real hard right at people for a while now and it was nice to see that one go out for her," said Lombardi.
Noteworthy: Bunker tied Samantha Pappas (2010-13) for fifth in UO career RBI with 155. She also tied Jill Robinson (1997-00) for sixth in UO career runs with 154 … When she scores two more runs, Bunker will become the only player in program history ranked in the UO career top five in hits, doubles, runs and RBI … Humphreys drew her team-leading 14th walk of the season in the second inning … Luschar extended her hitting streak to five games – her first five starts of the 2023 season.

Coach Melyssa Lombardi on Morgan Scott
"She stayed calm. We had a couple of inning there where we were in a bit of a spot and our pitching and out defense got us out of it."
On Deck: Game two of the ASU series will be Saturday at 5 p.m. (Pac-12 Network Live Stream).
