T&F Preview: Women's Throws
01/08/18 | Track and Field
Previewing the Oregon track and field program by event groups entering the start of the 2018 indoor season (Jan. 13)
Head coach Robert Johnson: "There is a lot of young talent here as everyone has at least three years of eligibility left. Ronna Stone, Kiana Phelps, and Maddie Rabing continue to develop after a solid year last year, and I am really excited to see what kind of immediate impact our newcomers can make."
SHOT PUT, WEIGHT THROW, HAMMER/DISCUS (OUTDOORS)
Who's back: The Women of Oregon return three talented young throwers in 2018, welcoming back sophomores Kiana Phelps (below) and Maddie Rabing along with redshirt sophomore Ronna Stone (above). Phelps and Stone finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the discus at last year's Pac-12 Championships while also competing in the shot put, and Phelps went on to qualify in the discus for the NCAA West Regionals. Rabing was also an NCAA West Regional qualifier as a freshman in the shot put, and she competed at the Pac-12 Championships in both the shot put and the hammer throw.
Who's new: The lone newcomer in this group for 2018 is Sydnee Walker (below), a promising freshman out of Roswell, Ga. Competing for King's Ridge Christian High School, Walker was ranked fourth in the nation among high-school throwers in both the hammer and the weight throw, and she was the 2016 USATF Junior Olympics champion in the hammer throw.

JAVELIN (OUTDOORS)
Who's back: Alexis Rigmaiden (below) is back for Oregon in the javelin, but she will be a new face for Duck fans after redshirting her true freshman season last year. Hailing from Lake Charles, La., Rigmaiden was a three-time state champion in the javelin, winning in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and she also placed second in the state in 2016 in both the shot put and the discus.

Who's new: There will be a pair of new javelin throwers for the Women of Oregon in 2018, as the Ducks brought in one transfer and one freshman to join Rigmaiden. The Ducks added freshman Keira McCarrell, an Oregon native and standout at West Salem High School who finished as the runner-up in the javelin at the 2016 Oregon State 6A Championships. The 2015 USATF Junior Olympics champion in the javelin, McCarrell also shined in multiple other events during high school and could become a factor for UO in the combined events as her career progresses. JoJo Ananouko (below) joins the Ducks as a redshirt sophomore after competing for the University of San Francisco, and she is a Portland, Ore., native who helped Jesuit High School to four straight 6A Metro League titles.
