Win Streak Reaches 11
04/28/23 | Softball
BERKELEY, Calif. – Allee Bunker drove in four runs – a day after knocking in five – and Morgan Scott threw a complete game to lift No. 14 Oregon to a 9-1 victory over Cal Friday at Levine-Fricke Field.

The Ducks (33-11, 12-7) scored in each of the first four innings and never trailed in winning their 11th game in a row.

"I think these guys have done a really good job with game one," said coach Melyssa Lombardi, who watched her team win the opening game against a Pac-12 opponent for the six time in seven series.

How It Happened: The speed of Oregon produced in a run in the top of the first. Kai Luschar chopped an infield single to third and the throw to try to get at her at first sailed down the right field line. Luschar sprinted around to third on the two-base error and then came home on Bunker's RBI ground out.

"I think it's always important to score first and we've emphasized that every game," said Bunker, who was 3-for-4 on Friday. "Because it puts the pressure on them from the get-go and we can kind of settle in and relax and I think that's what we did and allowed us to win the game today."

The Ducks added four runs in the second inning. KK Humphreys walked and Vallery Wong reached on an error. Tehya Bird walked to load the bases before Paige Sinicki drove in a run on an RBI ground out.

Pinch-hitter Karissa Ornelas walked to reload the bases. Bunker then lined a drive into the left center-field gap that brought Wong and Sinicki home. Terra McGowan's sacrifice fly plated the Ducks' fourth run of the inning for a 5-0 lead.

After Cal (31-15-1, 7-11-1) got a run back in the bottom of the second, Humphreys answered in the top of the third with a solo home run the opposite way, her sixth homer of the season.

Sinicki was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth inning and Luschar reached on an infield single. Bunker then singled up the middle to score Sinicki for a 7-1 lead. It was Bunker's career-high 50th RBI of the season as her 3-for-4 day raised her season batting average to .410.

McGowan followed with a single through the right side to extend her hitting streak to a career-best eight games, scoring Luschar in the process.

Oregon added final run in the seventh after Ariel Carlson walked and came around to score on a couple of wild pitches.

Scott, pitching on her birthday, scattered eight hits over seven innings, allowing one earned run and striking out two in improving to 11-4 on the season.

"I really liked how (Scott) started the game," said Lombardi. "I thought she stayed strong throughout the game and got herself out of some jams. I thought her pitches were moving and she had really good command."

The Ducks also played error-free ball and made a number of plays up the middle to quell any potential rallies by Cal. Hanna Delgado also made two impressive catches in center field.

"I thought the defense did a really good job of bringing momentum back to our dugout," said Lombardi. "We had some big 50-50 plays that we needed our defense to make. I just can't say enough about our defense. I loved what they did all game long."

Notable: Oregon's 11-game winning streak is its longest since an 11-game streak early in the 2022 season … The Ducks' seven-game Pac-12 winning streak is the program's longest since winning 12 league games in a row in 2018 … Oregon has scored at least seven runs in five consecutive ball games and has scored at least four runs in all 11 games of its current winning streak … Luschar scored a career-high three runs for the second straight game and went 3-for-3 to raise her batting average to .559 on the season … Humphreys drew her team-leading 19th walk of the season.

Hot Streak for McGowan
McGowan went 1-for-2 with a couple of RBIs in extended her hitting streak to a career-best eight games. During that span, she is batting .500 (12-of-24) with three doubles a home run and 11 RBI.

Pac-12 Tournament Implications
With their win today, the Ducks can be no lower than the No. 6 seed for next week's Pac-12 Tournament and could finish as high as second. Oregon moved into a tie for third with Utah, which lost 3-0 to UCLA on Friday, at 12-7. The two teams are a game behind Washington (14-7) for second place, and a game up on Stanford (11-8). The Ducks and Utes finish the regular season with a three-game series at Jane Sanders Stadium next week.

"She did great as usual. 'Demon Mode' came out once again and it's just nice to play behind her. She's just throwing strikes and getting ahead."
